Dyson announce their first-ever robot vacuum
Dyson has unveiled their first-ever robot vacuum, adding to their growing family of market-leading household appliances. A result of years of designing, the Dyson 360 Vis Nav addresses a number of problems that often arise with the use of standard robot vacuums. Best of all, it can clean right up against the walls of your home, something round robot vacuum cleaners have always struggled to do.
The 360 Vis Nav is shaped like a capital D, allowing easier movement through the corners and edges of the house. It's also been designed with suction power, effective navigation and maneuverability front of mind.
"We know there are many frustrations with current robot vacuum cleaners," Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer at the company, stated in a press release.
"Some have low suction power, or inefficient navigation systems which means that they often get stuck and don't do a proper job of vacuuming. Dyson engineers have focused on developing machines that overcome these challenges and which increasingly anticipate our needs, understand its environment, and operate autonomously."
So, what is new and improved about Dyson's robot vacuum?
Edge cleaning
The Dyson 360 Vis Nav is the first robot vacuum to have an edge, with most existing models being circular. These designs have been unable to effectively clean the edges of homes, creating a need for a second vacuum in most households. The 360 Vis Nav is the first model to take this into account. Using sensors to detect the edges of a room, it then cleans via redirected suction through a side actuator. This eliminates the need for a second go at cleaning your floors.
Smart app
You can control the Dyson 360 Vis Nav from your phone with a smart app. Deeply intuitive, it allows you to schedule cleans around the house according to a zoned floor plan, which can then be made into a regular cleaning routine.
Beyond this, the 360 Vis Nav can create a dust map of your home, becoming aware of hotspots that are addressed by the vacuum through increased suction power. Like any good app, it will also be consistently updated by Dyson's team, with updates available through Wi-Fi connectivity.
Dyson has also made the important decision to not store this data.
Triple-action brush
The brush of the 360 Vis Nav has also been optimised to clean various surfaces and collect different types of dirt and grime. Combining soft, 'fluffy' nylon, anti-static carbon fibre and stiff nylon, it can tackle large debris, fine dust, and whatever might be squished into your carpet, leaving all floors equally clean.
Vision system
Another aspect that sets this robot vacuum apart is its 'vision'. With a fish-eye style camera installed in its top, it has a 360-degree range to see your entire house as it moves, and a rapid processor so it can map its surroundings and remember them with the help of the app. This means it gets more effective with each clean. There are also 26 sensors throughout its body that detect dust, obstacles to avoid, and the walls of the house, keeping it from running into anything.
This has resulted in a motor that spins up to 110,000 rpm to create suction six times stronger than that of any other robot vacuum on the market.
Efficiency and abilities
Some robot vacuums just aren't that good at sucking up dust and debris, an issue that was paramount to the engineers who designed the 360 Vis Nav. This has resulted in a motor that spins up to 110,000 rpm to create suction six times stronger than that of any other robot vacuum on the market. Paired with its mapping system and 360-degree vision, there's no other vacuum like it.
Unfortunately, the 360 Vis Nav can't climb over cords or up sets of stairs, but it can go up over a height of 21 millimetres, and clean under furniture up to 99 millimetres in height. Just like any time you're cleaning, it's also worth picking up any objects off the floor that might get in the way to ensure a complete vacuuming experience.
Price
Like most of Dyson's products, the 360 Vis Nav sits at a relatively high price point. However, Dyson's engineering reputation is trusted worldwide for ongoing quality, even when taking on new types of technology.
The 360 Vis Nav is now available for $2,399.
