"Sullivan's Crossing isn't just about the romance," she said. "It feels more about the family dynamics and the relationships within the community as well.

"I think the romance is sprinkled in there nicely and when you get a good chunk of it, finally, you're like, 'OK, there it is. That's what I've been waiting for.' But it's not smacking you over the head."

The series is from the team behind Virgin River, another hugely successful show that was the first to be adapted from Robyn Carr's books.

On how she felt to star in a drama that would follow on from Virgin River, Kohan added: "It was really exciting because everybody loved that show, so you knew there were going to be lots of eyeballs on this.

"But, also, [executive producer] Roma Roth made it clear from the beginning that we wanted this to be its own thing. So even going into it, we weren't approaching it from a 'how do I do what they've done' perspective.

"I'd watched a couple episodes, to get the idea, but I didn't want to overdo it and feel like we're copying or trying to do the same thing."

Kohan also praised the casting on the series.

Gilmore Girls fans will be elated to see Scott Patterson, who played Luke, and Chad Michael Murray, who starred as Tristan, reunite on-screen in Sullivan's Crossing.

"Scott is such a great actor," Kohan beamed. "He's alive in front of you within a second, so you just know you're going to have something wonderful to play off of the whole time.

"It felt very safe and secure knowing that it's going to be a real exchange. And he's just funny, too. So, on set if it wasn't too heavy, the jokes were flying, and everyone was having a good time."

Maggie has feelings for two men in the series; Andrew Mathews [Allan Hawco] and Cal Jones [Murray].

When asked what the duo were like to work with, Kohan replied: "They were both just so wonderful to have on set. You just knew it was going to be a good day.

"I picture Chad as like this little ball of sun and warmth – that's just at the core of who he is. And Allan is just hilarious. He'll be cracking jokes, everyone's laughing, and then he drops in [to a scene] in a second. I'm like, 'Wait, I need a second!'."

Kohan concluded by saying she hopes viewers will resonate with the series, adding: "I just hope that people see a part of themselves reflected back in the show and maybe the situations and relationships that they have had to navigate.

"I definitely did and for me that's always when a show feels extra special."

There's never been a better time to get into Sullivan's Crossing, as the series has just been renewed for Season 2.
